Our Objectives

Work with national disability allies to advance a rights-based approach to disability supports, including a federal disability lens for policymaking.

Provide technical support and consultation to the implementation of the Accessible Canada Act.

Continue our leadership role in civil society monitoring of and reporting on Canada's implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Why It Matters

Despite national and international laws, people with an intellectual disability in Canada still do not have their human rights recognized and respected.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is an international treaty to promote, protect, and ensure the full and equal rights and freedoms of all people with disabilities. Canada ratified the CRPD in 2010 and acceded to the Optional Protocol in 2018, but is not fully meeting all its obligations under this law.

In 2019 the Accessible Canada Act  became a federal law. Its goal is to identify, remove, and prevent barriers faced by people with disabilities. Even still, people with an intellectual disability experience many barriers to full participation and inclusion in Canada.

Our Vision

People with an intellectual disability realize the rights to which they are entitled under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and Canadian disability legislation reflects those rights.

Our Work

What We're Doing

Inclusion Canada is helping federally regulated organizations develop their Accessibility Plans under the Accessible Canada Act, ensuring people with an intellectual disability are considered in these plans. We’re also helping Accessible Standards Canada create standards and regulations that prevent and remove barriers for people with an intellectual disability, by participating in technical committees and the consultation and review process.

Inclusion Canada is an ECOSOC-accredited organization and is involved in the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). We work with other disability organizations to report to the UN on Canada’s progress meeting its responsibilities under the CRPD. We also participate in reviews and interpretative clarifications on the CRPD and engage with the Special Rapporteur on the rights of persons with disabilities. By participating in these international efforts, Inclusion Canada not only advocates for the rights of people with an intellectual disability in Canada, but also works to shape global disability rights policy.
