Nos objectifs

Proactively work to advance access to justice for people with an intellectual disability, including through the provision of procedural and age-appropriate accommodations, in order to facilitate their effective role as direct and indirect participants in all legal proceedings.

Develop and launch a policy dialogue on federal criminal justice reform that enables fair treatment under the law for people with an intellectual disability involved in criminal cases as victims or the accused.

En quoi est-ce important

People with an intellectual disability experience sexual assault, abuse, and coercion at much higher rates than people without disabilities.

Ableist attitudes, complex processes, and lack of accommodations in Canada’s justice system prevent people with an intellectual disability from reporting crimes, being treated fairly, and having their stories heard and believed. This discriminatory experience exists throughout police, court, and corrections systems.

Notre vision

People with an intellectual disability are safe from violence, abuse, and coercion in their daily lives, and the criminal justice system has the capacity to respond appropriately to ensure equal and fair treatment under the law.
